Researcher, The Andaman and Nicobar Environmental Team

I enjoy working among people who live in rural communities, either in the forest or close to the sea. I have worked mostly among communities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and over the past years have developed an interest in resource sharing systems, acculturation, and localised resource management strategies. I work with both government and non government agencies partnering with each on various projects.

Talk title: Experiences with the southern Nicobar Islanders

I focus on the southern Nicobar islanders having spent a few months every year with them for more than a decade. These islanders like many others, have lived along the coast for centuries, making the best of the seas and forests through their beliefs, knowledge and livelihood requirements. Their ability to handle problems was built on their sense of community and sharing, with a vision for the future. This ability was reinforced through healing rituals and festivities conducted for both individuals and community. I will share my experiences from the past years in this region to provide some insights on change.
