Shishir Rao is a research consultant with the Center for Wildlife Studies, Bengaluru and an alumnus of the WCS-India and NCBS Master’s program in wildlife biology and conservation. His current project involves understanding the spatial patterns of hydrological connectivity in the west flowing rivers of the Western Ghats. In the past, he has worked in the Sakleshpur landscape to understand the socio-ecological issues related to small hydropower development.

Talk title: Small dams, big problems

Small hydropower projects continue to be touted as a source of clean and green energy. In India alone, over a thousand such projects have already been commissioned, and over 6000 more have been proposed for further development. Here, we explore the linkages between the environmental and social concerns of these projects, the current scenario of SHP development in India, and the potential way forward.
